With Avengers:Infinity War out this week, the 2018 summer blockbuster season is officially upon us. Here are some fantastic blockbusters you’ll be able to catch in cinemas across the region.
You’ll notice that some of the UK release dates are slightly different to the US this summer. This is due to studios moving films as to not clash with the FIFA World Cup. Check out all the summer’s official release dates here.
Avengers: Infinity War – 26th April
With 10 years worth of Marvel Cinematic Universe films culminating towards this film, there’s a lot riding on it. Avengers:Infinity War picks up two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War in which the team was torn apart. Thanos arrives on Earth to collect the Infinity Stones promising to destroy half of the universe. The Avengers must re-group with the help of the Guardians of the Galaxy and prevent this from happening. Expect to see up to 40 superheroes in the same scene – AMAZING!
Deadpool 2 – 15th May
I really don’t think anyone could play the character of Deadpool better than Ryan Reynolds. With the first film breaking box-office records I think the fans agree, too. Deadpool 2 sees the return of the wisecracking mercenary who, this time, forms a team of mutants called the X-Force to protect a young mutant from the time-travelling soldier, Cable (played by Josh Brolin). Expect to see the fourth-wall broke, violence and an abundance of puns.
Solo: A Star Wars Story – 24th May
Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not, expect to see at least one film from this franchise every year for the foreseeable future. Solo: A Star Wars Story is the origin story of Han Solo; arguably one of the most beloved and charismatic characters in film. The film will follow Han through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld. Audiences will also get to see the first meeting of Han and Chewbacca.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 6th June
When Jurassic World was released in 2015 it made a roaring $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office and still stands as the 4th highest-grossing movie of all time. This next instalment is set 4 years after the Jurassic World world theme park closed down. Owen and Clair, played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, return to the island to rescue 12 species from extinction after they learn that a once dormant volcano on the island is ready to blow. I’m sure that this film will be pure blockbuster fun, far-fetched and full of action. We’re also getting it TWO WEEKS before the US – lucky us!
Ocean’s 8 – 22nd June
“Every Con has its Pros”
Check this out for a cast. Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling and Rihanna. That’s some girl power! Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister to Danny Ocean who was the main protagonist in the original Oceans Trilogy, wants to pull off the heist of the century at the star-studded Met Gala. “Every Con has its Pros”.
Incredibles 2 – 13th July
It’s been 14 years – yes 14 YEARS – since the first Incredibles film came out. In this long-awaited sequel, Mr.Incredible is left to care for baby Jack-Jack whilst his wife, Elastigirl, is out being a full-time superhero saving the world. I’d bet my last penny on the fact that I’m sure that Pixar will once again deliver a fantastic animated story whilst also packing an emotional punch. I can’t wait to see what Jack-Jack’s powers will actually be.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout – 26th July
Expect stunt upon stunt with this latest Mission:Impossible film – star Tom Cruise actually broke his ankle whilst performing a stunt on set. I really hope this follows in the success of the last two instalments which have been brilliant when compared to the flops of MI2 and MI3. This story follows Ethan Hunt and his IMF team racing against time after a mission gone wrong. ** WARNING – DON’T WATCH THE TRAILER IF YOU DON’T LIKE HEIGHTS**
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – 27th July
In 2008 Mamma Mia had millions of people dancing in the cinema aisle whilst cringing at Pierce Brosnan attempting to sing. I always said that the first film looked like one of those films that would be great fun on set and this sequel stays true to that. This film follows Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, as she finds out more about her Mum’s (Meryl Streep) life when she learns that she’s expecting her first child.
Ant-Man And The Wasp – 3rd August
Coming off the back of Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the 20th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, played by the charismatic Paul Rudd, deal with the fall out from Captain America: Civil War as he struggles to re-balance his home life with his responsibilities as superhero. The film also sees him team up with The Wasp played by Evangeline Lilly. Expect a complete shift in tone between this and Infinity War with lower stakes and plenty of humour.
Christopher Robin – 17th August
In the latest re-telling of one of Disney’s classic tales, Christopher Robin meets his old friend Winnie the Pooh in this heartfelt story about family. The adventure sees an adult Christopher, played by Ewan McGregor, return to the Hundred Acre Wood to help Pooh find his lost friends. It all looks very cute!
Which one of these films are you most looking forward to?
