We love live theatre here at ‘The Northern Niche’. Last year we enjoyed Hairspray, Chicago and The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Sunderland Empire.

Here are our top picks for Northern Spring theatre touring the region…

Newcastle Theatre Royal

The Band – Tuesday 3rd April till Saturday 14th April

The band is a BRAND NEW musical! It’s written by Tim Firth featuring Take That songs. The cast, you may remember, was put together through last year’s BBC reality show, Let It Shine. The musical has had stellar reviews so it’s looking like it might not  be a flop like The Spice Girl’s musical, Viva Forever wasIt’ll probably hit London’s West End after the tour!

Hairspray – Monday 25th June till Saturday 30th June

Having seen this tour last year we can certainly recommend it. Set in 1960’s Baltimore, the story follows Tracy Turnblad; a girl eager to teach people a thing or two about racial integration. The songs, including Welcome to the 60s and You Can’t Stop The Beat, are super catchy and well known due to the 2007 film adaptation.

Shrek The Musical – Wednesday 31st January till Sunday 11th February

Another musical we’ve seen before and loved during it’s initial London run back in 2011. The part of Lord Farquaad is particularly hilarious. The musical is pretty much a theatrical re-telling of the first Shrek film (arguably the best one) featuring brilliant original songs as well as I’m a Believer.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical – Tuesday 6th March till Saturday 10th March

Another jukebox musical with a book by Douglas McGrath. It tells the story of the early years and career of Carole King, using songs that she wrote. Expect to hear well loved tunes from The Drifters, The Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and the Monkees. The older generation will enjoy this shot of nostalgia for sure!

Since opening on Broadway in 2003, Wicked has won over 100 major awards worldwide. This is the 2nd UK tour which will once again tell the story set pre The Wizard of Oz. It showcases the unlikely friendship between two young women; a popular blonde girl, Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.

Manchester Palace Theatre

Miss Saigon – Wednesday 21st March till Saturday 12th May

Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Boubil and Schonberg’s legendary musical is embarking on a UK tour. With a huge production of over 60 actors, the story is set in the latter days of the Vietnam war when a 17-year-old girl is forced to work in a Saigon bar. There, she falls in love with an American GI and the story ensues.
