Live theatre in the UK is often dominated by what’s going on in the West End of London. Yes, something else in this country that is London biased *sigh*. Here at ‘The Northern Niche’ we love the theatre and want to encourage you to visit local Northern theatres as much as you can. Award winning tour productions often grace a number of theatres throughout the North and this Autumn’s schedule is jam packed! Here are some of our top picks…enjoy!
Sister Act first hit London’s West End in 2009 and was nominated for ‘Best Musical’ in the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards. Its success has led to a second UK tour with X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke now in the lead role as Deloris Van Cartier. The hilarious story follows Deloris; a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. She is hidden under protective custody in the one place she won’t be found – a Convent! The story unravels from there with Deloris helping her fellow sister to find their voices.

Ghost: The Musical
Based on a 1990 romantic film of the same name that made so many people shed a tear, the musical version is now on tour again! The plot centres on lovers Sam and Molly who are attacked leading to Sam’s death. He is then caught between the real world and the next as Molly is in danger and cannot be left. That middle world leads to superb creations of special effects and clever illusions – something that will leave you in awe!
Sunderland Empire – 26th September till 1st October
Manchester Palace Theatre – 25th October till 29th October
The Rocky Horror Show
Doing the ‘Time Warp’ once again! I can actually say from personal experience that this is one of the best and most enjoyable theatre experiences I have ever had! Full of laughs, famous musical numbers and a brilliant cast this tour is not to be missed! Special mentions to Liam Tamne as ‘Frank n Furter’ and Kristian Lavercombe as ‘Riff Raff’; both are world class performers. My tickets are booked to see this for the second time in a year and yours should be too!
Liverpool Empire – 17th October till 22nd October
Manchester Opera House – 24th October till 29th October
Sunderland Empire – 7th November till 12th November
Chicago: The Musical
Chicago has been running for a long ass time; 41 years to be precise. There is obviously a reason it’s still going with recent reviews of the UK tour saying it’s ‘still the sexiest most sensational musical’ and ‘the most exciting musical of its generation’. With household names such as John Partridge, Hayley Tamaddon and Jessie Wallace as part of the cast it promises to deliver. I’m off to book my ticket…
Liverpool Empire Theatre – 12th September till 17th September
Leeds – 22nd November till 26th November
Sunderland 28th November till 3rd December
