Our Northern Theatre Top Picks For Autumn 2017

We love live theatre here at ‘The Northern Niche’. We recently went to see the Hairspray UK tour at Sunderland Empire and felt inspired to write this post. Here are our top picks for shows in the Northern region for the autumn season!

Newcastle Theatre Royal

Grease – Monday 16th till Saturday 21st October

An absolute classic! Starring Danielle Hope (Over the Rainbow winner) as Sandy & Tom Parker  (The Wanted) as Danny, the musical features all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie! So dust off the leather jacket and boogey on down to Greased Lightin’.

Northern Ballet’s The Little Mermaid – Tuesday 31st October till Sat 4th November

Immerse yourself in mystical underwater world! We all know the story of ‘The Little Mermaid’ – a mermaid gets a glimpse of life beyond the sea and falls in love with a human. In this brand new, spectacular show see the story adapted into a graceful ballet.

Sunderland Empire

Mamma Mia – Tuesday 17th October till Saturday 11th November

When the Mamma Mia film hit cinemas in 2008 it was a cultural phenomenon. Over 60 million people have seen the show worldwide and with a long spell at Sunderland’s Empire theatre you can now have your opportunity. With the story told using ABBA’s jukebox of songs you’re guaranteed to be dancing in the aisles.

Blood Brothers – Monday 27th November till Saturday 2nd December

Often heralded as ‘one of the best musicals ever written’, Blood Brothers tells the story of two brothers separated at birth who grow up on opposite sides of the tracks. Meeting again through fateful consequences, this musical will have you in awe of its powerful message.

Leeds Grand Theatre

In the role that earned him an Olivier award nomination, Will Young reprises his critically acclaimed performance of Emcee in Rufus Norris’ production of Cabaret. The musical features some iconic theatre songs including Two Ladies Maybe This Time.

Manchester Palace Theatre 

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat – Tuesday 17th till Saturday 21st October

With northern treasure, Joe McElderry starring as Joseph this tour has been getting rave reviews across the country. The brilliant production by Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber tells the biblical story of Joseph featuring well known songs such as Any Dream Will Do Close Every Door To Me. 

Sunset Boulevard – Monday 23rd October till Saturday 4th November

Sunset Boulevard is a compelling story of romance and obsession, based on Billy Wilder’s legendary film, with Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s wonderful book and lyrics. This tour stars Ria Jones who received standing ovations during her stint in London. It also features strictly star, Danny Mac.

Liverpool Empire

War Horse – Wednesday 15th November till Saturday 2nd December

Famed for it’s spectacular use of puppetry, War Horse is the stage adaption of Michael Morpurgo’s world war 1 set novel. It’s won a plethora of awards and had a hugely successful 8 year run in London’s West End. Definitely a must see!
