The weather is improving. Summer is on the way. The North East is starting to be all European with a variety of outdoor events across the region. We’re sharing some of our top picks of North East events happening in the months of May and June. Enjoy!
13th May – History Walk, Durham Cathedral
Both of us at ‘The Northern Niche’ love a good bit of English history so this walk at Durham Cathedral opens our list! The walk takes in the gorgeous woodlands and riverbanks of this beautiful city with an expert tour guide providing insights to the history of the city. The tour only costs £3 – bargain and you can book your place here.
27th May – Skylive Airshow, Durham-Tees Valley Airport
Following its hugely successful launch events last year the Skylive Airshow is back! This year is promised to be even better with displays from some of the world’s most impressive and gravity-defying aircraft. This event sounds perfect for a family day out; especially with small children who will be amazed and constantly occupied by all the goings on. Who knows, the event may even hone in on the plight of the much loved regional airport too.
27th & 28th May, Malton Food Lovers Festival, Malton
Malton is Yorkshire’s food capital; who knew? This weekend festival celebrates the finest Yorkshire produce and cooking this spring. As well as a huge variety of food stalls there are also some special guests with the new ‘Great British Bake Off’ judge, Prue Leith being one of the headliners. You can check out the full list of goings on their website.
30th May – 10th June – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Theatre Royal, Newcastle
The National Theater’s internationally acclaimed production returns to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal. The story follows a boy with an extraordinary brain who is exceptional at maths but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He then falls under the suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’ dog, taking him on a journey that upturns his world. Winner of 7 Olivier and 5 Tony Awards it is not to be missed. Book your tickets here!
3rd June – Wynyard Hall Summer Gardens, Wynyard
We have posted about the fabulous gardens at Wynyard Hall before when we attended a great gin event there. This summer the garden is transforming into a children’s wonderland playing host to a Teddy Bears’ picnic. They also have a great eatery with an extensive selection of cakes and pastries so even more of a perk to visit!
10th June – Saltburn Farmers’ Market, Saltburn
Did you know that one of the countries best rated farmers’ market is here in the North East at Saltburn? Expect to see a huge range of locally produced meat and game, fresh fruit and veg and more! The market also creates a family friendly atmosphere so you can take the whole troop! We also did a post about Saltburn being on the up recently and included some of the shops and eateries in the town so you can check them out, too!
Hope you enjoyed this list of things to do in the North East in the next couple of months. Are there any more events you’d add to the list? Has this inspired you to put any of these in your diary? We hope so!
