If you are a frequent visitor to our little niche in the North you’ll know that Declan and I are partial to a gin and tonic or three. We were also picked to be guest bloggers at one of last winter’s top gin events, The Gin Festival in Newcastle.
Now, though summer is on the way and it seems like there is an endless supply of gin tasting everywhere.
With this in mind I thought I’d do a round up of some well known and some not so well known. If you haven’t fallen for the charms of a strawberries & cream picnic gin then now is the time to try.
One of the North East’s much loved museums, Beamish is hosting a Grand Georgian Gathering on the evening of May 20th where they will be a pop up gin cocktail bar to sample the mother’s ruin and party like it’s 1799!

The very same Gin Festival we were guests of returns to Newcastle for the summer season the weekend of June 9th. This time due to growing popularity it’s at a bigger venue – Newcastle Racecourse. We would highly recommend this — it’s great value for money with a vast choice of gins some created by micro distilleries you otherwise wouldn’t have heard of. Tickets sell out fast for this and as we’ve gone to publish the Saturday is already sold out. Tickets are still available for Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool.
A good friend of ours gave us the wink about a gorgeous little place over in Durham – Crook Hall & Gardens. It seems like May 20th is popular for gin tasting — wouldn’t you know it’s my birthday, too? Anyway, they are hosting a G&Tea event — how clever? The menu sounds so tempting and includes a mocha chocolate based gin truffle. Yum!

In the ‘spirit’ of gin becoming increasingly popular even the North Yorkshire Moors Railway have got in on the taste experience with their ‘Steam ‘n’ Gin excursion. Available 3rd June, 4th August and 29th September departing from Pickering Station.

Last but not least why not join ‘Gin School’? Yes, you heard right! It’s a lesson you’ll love, I know we would at The Gin Bar, Crowne Plaza, Stephenson Quarter. Set to be a monthly enrolment with expert ‘ginstructors’ to ensure you pass with flying colours. We reckon we’d get an ‘A’* at this! More information available on The Gin Bar website.

Plus gin lovers the world over can now celebrate and rejoice with World Gin Day on Saturday 10th June.
Let us know of any other gin events around the North won’t you or if you sample any of our suggestions we’d love to hear from you?
